Review: Volkswagen Ameo



So, a sub-4m Volkswagen sedan? Is it a Vento with a smaller boot or a Polo with a slightly bigger boot?

Well, the Vento is essentially a Polo with a big boot, and while being based on the same platform, the Vento gets an extended wheelbase that provides added legroom at the back. However, the Ameo has the exact wheelbase as the hatchback with almost no changes mechanically. So, the Ameo is more of a Polo with a slightly bigger boot.

Does it mean that the Germans have just stuck a boot to the Polo?

Not exactly. By redesigning the front bumper, VW has reduced the front overhang by 35mm and added those very millimeters to the rear, which makes it look more proportionate. They've also added some design bits to the front bumper to make it look less bulky as compared to the Polo's.

Are these the only design changes?

So, while it borrows the hood, headlamps, side fenders, doors and the upper grille from the Polo, the rest of the car has been redesigned. For instance, the roof has been lowered by 15mm and there’s a sweeping C-pillar to make the design more flowing than the hatches.


What about the rear design?

Everything is new. A new stubby boot, new tail lamps, new bumper and all that. VW says the Ameo is the first VW made especially for India. While it was designed in Germany by German designers, they've taken a lot of input from the guys sitting in VW’s India office. Also, they say, it's been tailor-made according to Indian needs based on customer surveys done all over the country.

That’s good to know. Now tell us, how's it to drive?

In short, exactly like the Polo. The platform that it's based on, is a capable one. And if you really push it hard, it can hold its line rather well. The steering has the right amount of weight and it increases progressively with speed. It is, by far, the best sub-4m sedan in terms of handling. And that's no surprise because the hatch that it is based on is one of the best driving hatches in the segment.

And the ride?

Umm, we'd say the Amaze and the Xcent do a better job of absorbing bumps. But this one is a bit more pliant and has less vertical movements compared to its rivals. The struts tend to get a bit noisy at times, but nothing that you should be worried about.

So you say it's the best one out there in terms of driving dynamics, but what about the space?

It's not as spacious as the Amaze or even the Xcent. The rear knee room is a bit tight. But to free up as much space as possible, VW has scooped out some bits of the front seat padding. But even with that, six-footers will find it a bit cramped at the back with the front seats adjusted to accommodate a decently built adult.

What’s the interior like?

Again, exactly like the Polo's – well-appointed dashboard with the dual-tone finish. The materials are of good quality and fit and finish is good too.

What about the engines?

For now, there's just one engine on offer: the 3-cyl, 1200cc petrol that churns out 74bhp and 110Nm of torque. Like all three pots, there are fair bit of vibrations from the engine.

Is that power enough for this one?

The numbers aren't impressive and nor is the performance. It's fine if you wish to cruise on the highway or for your daily commute in the city, but at times when you need to quickly overtake fast paced cars on the highway, you'll have to drop a cog or two and make the motor spin at 4000rpm or above to really get going. We'd have liked some more rush from the engine, but as they say, no amount of power will ever be enough.



And what about the pricing?

As we told you a couple of days back, VW has got it right with the Ameo's pricing. It beats almost all of its rivals, with prices starting from Rs 5.41 lakh and going up to Rs 6.91 lakh.

What sort of goodies do we get in the top-end Ameo?

It's been loaded with creature comforts. You get everything from auto AC, cruise control, rear AC vent, electrically folding ORVMs, Bluetooth, steering controls and reverse camera amongst the rest.



If it were you, would you put your money on this or one of its rivals?

As we told you, it drives better than all of the other sub-4m sedans, is loaded with features and the pricing is aggressive too. We wouldn't say it's a looker, but you can't have everything, you see.

The verdict aggressively priced compact sedan has build quality, driving dynamics and a healthy feature list on its side. Petrol motor lacks punch, though.



Maruti-Suzuki Vitara Brezza

Compact SUVs made a great impact on Indians after the upcoming of Renault Duster. In order to the is several manufacturers came with their models even the Indian manufacturers. After Mahindra here comes the Vitara Brezza from Maruti-Suzuki.
Vitara Brezza  completely can called as an "Indian SUV". Brezza had been completely designed and manufactured in India even for global markets.
Exterior
Brezza has a great muscular body and had a stunning look with a small radiator grill with integrated headlamp unit with projector lamp with DRL's. The big huge airdamp with integrated indicators and foglamps on bumber gives a realistic SUV character.
Brezza has a dual tone floating roof, and side profile is not much fluidic, but the shoulder line comes from front to back.
Brezza had a horizontal tail lamp, and a big chromium Name plate. The back part may not always give the SUV character.

Interior
Simple and single toned dash board. Keeps a usual design which we had seen in Maruti-Suzuki cars. Analogue metre, Touch Screen Multimedia with GPS, Automated Air condition, Cruise Control, Push Start button are other highlighted specifications. Colour changeable metre console is an attractive part.

Verdict
Brezza had a great  muscularity of an SUV but not much than Hyundai Creta. Feels like no road presence in cities, but packed with features that in with the competitors and cheapest. Brezza is notable SUV in a range of medium buget.

Tata Tiago - With First Drive Experience Video


As we all know, Tata Motors had been for a break and not much success on automobile market. After break Tata Motors came strongly with a compact sedan Zest and then Bolt. Now Tata launched new hatch back Tiago to the market. Now let's look at Tiago how is.  


Exterior

#Its Fantastico. According to the tagline,Tiago is really Fantastic. It keeps all the way different from other Tata Cars. Which means Zest and Bolt showed somewhat similarity to Indica. But Tiago is really new. The hexagon radiator grill and the multi-faced logo with curved frontiers is really good. The small long radiator grill integrated to headlights. At bottom the small air-damp with fog-lamps having chromium inserts.
The side profile is nice with fluidic character lines which leads to the tail lamp.

The back part with small taillights and leading Tata Logo. Number plate comes at bumper.
As of all Tata Tiago is looks to Ford Figo.

Interior

Dualtone interior. Good on standard. Black with peach will give more premium than Beach with grey. Layered designing. Fabric seat great comfort and height adjustable driving seat. AUX, USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi with voice Navigation (Connect NeXt). Tiago is packed with lots of utility spaces as bottle holder,mobile holder etc. Tiago is not bad in safety. Tiago has Dual Airbags with ABS - EBD and Corner Stability Control (CSC).

Low costing. Price worthing car. Driving experience is same to Maruti-Suzuki Swift. Nice looking and packed with exciting features.

When we talk about Ford Figo, it is well family hatch sedan. ford Figo gives you the best features.

The front is good with a chromium lined grilling. It looks somewhat we see in Aston Martin cars. The shoulder line which starts from the front gives you a special attitude to the New Ford Figo.

    Renault Kwid

    Budget hatch Segment  is one of the demanded segment until  a period. Maruti-Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Santro was one of the best hatch. Later vehicles like Hyundai Eon were  introduced. But due to the lack appearance and features  demand for hatch had decreased and  SUV had a large preference. This may be the reason, Renault introduced a hatch Named “KWID” with new style and feature.

    In appearance, Renault Kwid is a Crossover/Mini SUV. Renault Duster itself is an example, which was attracted by the shape. Compared to Kwid's competitors, Kwid has a greater presence which comes from the big radiator grill and big logo. The headlamp unit and foglamps is attractive. The plastic clading over the body gives a look of a Crossover Hatch.

    Interior

    As mentioned about Kwid's exterior, it is good with in interior. The Digital Instrument Cluster and Touch Screen Media-Navigation System (First In Segment) is fine. The 3-spoke Steering Wheel gives a sporty look (Looks good compared to other Renault Cars). Kwid gives a great visibility while driving like a SUV. There is good headroom but lack of legroom. The bootspace is more compared to its competitors.

    Drive

    Good driving like of a hatch.  Kwid has enough power and good handling. There is a vibration because of the 3-Cylinder engine. The light weight steering wheel  is sometimes convenience  at high speed.

    JM Verdict

    People who prefer a small (Budget Small Car) can prefer Renault Kwid. Compared to other hatches Kwid has a some features more as a plus point. Kwid gives a greater road presence and does not feel has a small car.

    Renault Lodgy

    One of the most globally accepted segment are MPV Segments. MPV means people need it to be powerful and should completely be a Multi utility vehicle. Last 10 years, Toyota Innova had put a large Impact on MPV's in India. Several manufactures introduced their competitors for Innova, but still Innova is not ready to give it up. Now Renault had launched their Lodgy to compete with the Innova. Let's checkout how Lodgy is able to  fight with Innova  !!!.

    Exterior

    Renault Lodgy in its appearence gives a looj of a MPV. Lodgy has a shape of a Van. The front is filled with a radiator grill with chromium finish with a large logo and the  fog lamp integerated airdamp (Vary according to variants).

    The side part with big doors and windshiels is a positive element, which is good while entering to car and gives a good visibility from inside. Lodgy has a boxy structure, but looks good. The rear part may not be so nive looking. But the attractive element is the taillight unit, which is shaped like a Honey nectar.

    Interior

    The dashboard is same as of Renault Duster. But may be due to change of colour the interior looks premium. Centre Console is fine with Touch Screen Media-Navigation, tiltable steering wheel with mounted switches. As a MPV, Lodgy has spacious cabin with lots of storage spaces. The 2nd and 3rd row A/C vents and Charging slots in every rows are some other features. (Not as a part of standard).

    Renault Lodgy gives good driving. Optable for long drives. There is a small inconvienience in the gear ratios, but as a 6-Speed transmission, it is not a problem. Anyway Lodgy gives a pleasant journey

People who prefer a Multi Utility Vehicle with good pricing, Renault Lodgy is a nice option.
